 Teacher Tips

The following are some basic suggestions to aide you in serving all types of learners.
Communications
  • get to know your students and their parents
  • build a good working rapport with parents
  • provide frequent progress reports
  • invite parents to assist in your classroom
  • invite parents to school functions
Classroom layout
  • "least restrictive environment"
  • locate students where you can easily monitor them
  • position students where they are less likely to be distracted by others
  • position students close to the front of the classroom
Outline class period on the chalk board
  • preview today's lesson at the beginning of the class period
Allow modification on tests
  • time requirements
  • methods of assessment (oral exams, projects, or allow students to have test read to them)
  • utilize "Resource Staff"
Provide written instructions
  • clearly written on chalk board,or on a handout
  • clearly state your expectations for each task
Require students to keep and maintain a class notebook
  • maintain assignment calendars
  • reinforce note taking and note taking strategies
Model learning
  • provide finished examples of assignments
  • provide a variety of visual aides
Design lessons that rely on different learning modalities
  • Visual- reading etc.
  • Tactile- hands on
  • Auditory- lecture
  • Kinesthetic- experimental
Reading guides
  • provide handouts of reading assignments- highlight or underline main ideas prior to copying
Utilize technology in the classroom
  • multimedia presentations
  • computers- word processing, Internet
Cooperative learning
Peer assisted learning
Focus on the students' strengths rather than their weaknesses.
